`Folk Festival is a triumph!`. Those were the headlines summing up the 2013 Southdowns Folk Festival which attracted well over 15,000 visitors over three great days of folk music, dance and quality food and drink. Reactions from both performers and visitors alike was overwhelmingly positive, and the Festival website was getting over 45,000 `hits` in the lead up to the event. The whole of Bognor Regis was buzzing with superb dancing, great sessions, ceilidhs, workshops and the weather stayed kind. The evening concerts in the town`s Alexandra Theatre were near `sell-outs` and the Bandstand Stage at Hotham Park saw real quality performances from a variety of excellent folk musicians, but the highlight has to be the sheer energy and quality of the entrants in the Sussex Young Folk Performers Competition held in the Park on the Saturday very deservedly won by Aimee MacKenzie and her younger sister Freya and brother Ross.

For 2014, the Festival will be run by the newly formed ` SOUTHDOWNS FOLK FESTIVAL`, a non-profit community group and already plans are far advanced to make the Festival even bigger and better than 2013. The dates for the 2014 event are Friday 26 to Sunday 28 September and ticket holders will have FIVE great afternoon and evening concerts to attend, plus a free Folk Club, sessions, workshops, dancing and all the music, food fayre and other attractions in Hotham Park. Various venues in the Town Centre will be hosting Festival events and everything has been designed so that there is no more than a 10 minute walk between all the different venues. The 2014 Festival programme is being put together right now, and performers already confirmed include DAVE SWARBRICK & MARTIN CARTHY ( Friday 26th ) , DERVISH ( Saturday 27th ), JEZ LOWE & THE BAD PENNIES ( Sunday 28th ) plus FLOSSIE MALAVIALLE, JIGANTICS, COLVIN QUARMBY, MEGSON, THE HUT PEOPLE, GREG RUSSELL & CIARAN ALGAR, FAKE THACKRAY with a lot more to follow!
